A recording no Emma lover should be without - 3 identical reviews, none pertaining to this magical set of tapes! One of my most treasured possessions. If you already love Emma, you will be delighted by Prunella Scales brilliant interpretation. If you didn t enjoy reading it, she may alert you to the wonderful humour you missed.I ve listened to audio books of Austen, read by people who appear to have no understanding of what they read, and with her sometimes complex but always precise sentence structure, this can be very annoying and intrusive. Ms Scales reads Austen as if she had written it. Her Miss Bates and Mrs Elton are comic masterpieces. But she helps us sympathise with Emma too, even as we laugh at her.I heartily recommend this tape. (And Scales husband, Timothy West, did an equally superb reading of Barchester Towers, which I couldn t live without either).

Captivating - As elegant, witty and humane as her subject, Josephine Ross has provided a most readable and worthwhile complement to the Cambridge Companion to Jane Austen, with which there is barely an overlap. Packed with good detail, well illustrated, these excellent essays written with sense and sensibility on a variety of topics should send newcomers scurrying to read Austen s works and stimulate the cognoscenti to take a fresh look. Stylishly and discreetly produced by Austen s own publisher, an unexpected bonus is the fine reproduction of the engraving of Opie s portrait of the beautiful Mary Wollstonecroft.
